What is Skin Lightening?

Do Skin Lightening Creams Work?Skin lightening or also known as skin whitening and skin bleaching is a process of lightening the skin tone by using different chemical substances. Skin lightening products work by minimising the pigment melanin in the skin. Generally, people use skin lightening products to address different kinds of skin pigmentation disorders like melasma. Others use these products to even out skin tone by minimising skin problems like acne scars and age spots. And there are some that use skin lightening products for the trend, especially in countries where people with lighter skin tones are admired like India, Thailand, Japan and Mexico.

How does Skin Lightening work?

Skin colour is caused by the pigment melanin. The different levels of melanin in our body makes our skin colour differ from each other. The higher level of melanin means darker skin complexion, the lower level of melanin means lighter skin complexion. Melanin also helps protect the skin from harmful rays of the sun. This is the reason why our skin darkens when we are exposed for a long time under the sun.

Skin Lightening products or treatments work by suppressing the production of melanin in the skin. The most common ingredients used for skin lightening products are Hydroquinone, Kojic Acid and Arbutin. Over-the-counter skin lightening products use lower concentration of Hydroquinone (2%). But there are also prescription lightening products that have up to 6% Hydroquinone. Just make sure to follow your doctor’s instructions when using skin lightening products, especially products with Hydroquinone.
