Does the Weather and Climate Affect Our Skin?

Our Skin Is the First Line of Defence in Our Body

Does the Weather and Climate Affect Our Skin? Our skin is the first line of defence in our body; this is one of the main reasons why weather or climate changes have instant effect to our skin. You might have noticed that during extreme weather your skin conditions often change. Whether it is cold or hot, humid or dry, you might have experiences where your skin tends to have itchy dry patches or even acne breakouts. These extreme changes in climate can bring up existing skin conditions or can cause new ones. This is why it is important to have the right skin care regimen whenever the season changes. Not only will it keep your skin healthy but it will also help you minimise skin conditions. Here are some tips that we have for you when the season turns.

Skincare Tips to Care for Your Skin when there are Weather or Climate Changes

1. Summer or Warm Weather Changes

A lot of people find it easier to maintain their skin during the warm season. The humidity of this time softens the skin and can bring back the moisture that has been stripped during the cold months. Although, excess heat and humidity increases sweat which means that your sebaceous glands tend to produce more oil which can then clog your pores. To maintain healthy skin during the summer, here are a few tips:

  • Try to use a good foaming cleanser to make sure that excess oil can be removed from your skin.
  • Eczema can sometimes act up during dry weather, make sure that the water you use to wash your skin isn’t that hot and use mild soap or cleansers to soothe the skin.
  • Make sure to use the right sunscreen to protect your skin from the harmful rays of the sun.
  • If you often have clogged pores during the summer, it is best to find a skincare product with beta hydroxy acid (BHA) which helps exfoliate built-up skin cells that often clog the pores.
  • Make sure that you drink 8-10 glasses of water during the summer to make sure that you are well hydrated.

2. Cold or Winter Changes

Winter can be tough on the skin; cold temperatures mean there is less humidity in the air which dries out the skin. A lot of people find this time of the year as the hardest on the skin, especially exposed skin. You can experience dry patches or even cracked or peeling skin due to the cold. Here are some helpful tips to sort out your skin during the winter:

  • Avoid long, hot baths. This may be tempting due to the cold conditions but taking too long in the shower can strip moisture from your skin.
  • Try to change your daily cleanser to a foaming water-soluble one to help add or retain moisture in your skin during winter months.
  • Make sure that you moisturise every day. This will help calm and soothe your dry skin which will then avoid any painful flaking or peeling.
  • Sunscreen is a must even during the cold months. Remember that UVA/UVB rays can still cause harmful damage to your skin even in the cloudiest day.
  • If you have a severe skin condition that flares up during the winter, it is best to get in touch with a specialist so they can recommend a medicated cream for you.
  • As always, make sure that you are well hydrated by drinking 8-10 glasses of water every day.

These are just a few tips on how you can make sure that your skin is well taken care of during the seasonal changes. If you have other skin conditions we recommend that you get in touch with a specialist to make sure that you have the right skincare products at your disposal.
