What are Age Spots or Liver Spots?

What are Age Spots Symptoms and Causes?

What Are Age Spots or Liver Spots?Age spots or also known as liver spots (Solar Lentigo) are skin pigmentation disorder that goes with age and sun exposure thus the name age spots. They are flat, gray, brown or dark spots. And these spots often appear on the skin that are usually exposed to the sun like the arms, hands, shoulder and face. Age spots normally appear in adults ages 50 and above. However, this doesn’t mean you can’t have them when you are young. If you happen to love spending time under the sun, age spots can develop as well.

Symptoms

Normally, people with fair skin complexion develop age spots but they can also be seen on people with darker complexion. Age spots are:

  • Light brown, brown or gray in color
  • Flat on the skin
  • Often seen on the face, hands, shoulders, arms and neck or the parts of the skin that are often exposed to the sun
  • Usually a bit larger than the size of a freckle and can be as big as 13 millimeters in diameter

Causes

Like any other skin pigmentation disorder, age spots are primarily caused by years or too much exposure to the sun or Ultraviolet (UV) light. This will then trigger the skin to produce the pigment melanin which is responsible for our skin complexion. The higher level of melanin means darker skin complexion and vice versa. Age spots develop when there’s a high concentration of melanin production on a specific area of the skin. That’s why age spots often appear on the skin that is often exposed to the sun. The use of tanning beds and lamps can also increase the chances of age spots to develop.

Normally, age spots are harmless and do not need medical attention. However, it’s still recommended to see a specialist especially if the spots changed in color or appearance like:

  • The size is quickly increasing
  • The spots have unusual mix of colors and have uneven border
  • The spots started to bleed, itch or becomes irritated and inflamed

It’s always best to protect your skin from the UV light of the sun by wearing sunscreen or moisturisers with SPF. AQI Daily Facial Moisturiser with SPF is a great example of all natural, oil free moisturiser that hydrates and protect your skin.
