Over the Counter and Cosmetic Treatments to Get Rid of Age Spots

How to get rid of age spots using over the counter and cosmetic treatments?

Age spots normally appear in adults ages 50 and above. However, this doesn’t mean you can’t have them when you are young. If you happen to love spending time under the sun, age spots can develop as well. Normally, these flat, gray, brown or dark spots are harmless and do not need medical attention but if you want to get rid of it, here are ways on how to treat your age spots:

1. By using Over The Counter or Prescription medication

  • Over the Counter and Cosmetic Treatments to Get Rid of Age SpotsProducts with Retinoids
Retinoids are derived from vitamin A which is well known to help minimise breakouts and dark spots. They are great antioxidants that help fight off premature aging like age spots. The most commonly known retinoids are Retin-A and Retinol. Retin-A is a good example of prescription medication that varies in strength and can be in gel or cream form while retinol is usually found in various skin care products that don’t need prescription.
  • Products with Glycolic Acid
Glycolic acid is an ingredient that is naturally derived from sugar canes. It is the smallest member of the Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) group. Glycolic acid is used in different skin care products like chemical peels, toners, and creams. It is a great exfoliator and helps even out skin tone. Most of the over the counter products have low concentrations ranging from 0.6 to 3 percent while plastic surgeons and dermatologists use higher concentrations of 30 to 70 percent.

There are various skin whitening products out there that can help lessen the appearance of your age spots. However, it’s still best to consult a specialist even if you are using an over the counter product to prevent skin irritation or complications.

2. Cosmetic Treatments

Aside from prescription and over the counter medications, you can also have cosmetic treatments to get rid of age spots. However, this option will be more expensive but you don’t have to wait for months to see the effects.

  • Skin Laser Treatments
Laser treatments can help reduce blemishes, fine lines, and pigmentation including age spots. This is accomplished with the use of direct, short, concentrated, pulsating beams of light. Laser treatments are not really painful. Usually a topical anesthetic is usually applied before each procedure to relieve the discomfort. Normally, it takes 2 to 3 sessions to treat the age spots but this can differ depending on the severity of the spots.
  • Chemical Peel
Chemical peel is a procedure that uses chemical solution to make your skin smoother and have even skin tone. This controlled procedure treats acne scars, wrinkles, and skin pigmentation including age spots. The type of chemical peel will depend on how severe the age spots. And the healing process will range from a week to a couple of months.
  • Microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion is a common cosmetic treatment that helps treat mild wrinkles, scars, large pores and age spots. It is a non-invasive skin exfoliating and rejuvenating procedure that makes use of special equipment that sprays tiny pressurized crystals and suctioned to remove the dead outer layer of the skin. Treatments are given with the interval of 2 to 3 weeks.

Remember to always protect your skin from the damages of the sun by using sunscreen or moisturisers with SPF. AQI Daily Facial Moisturiser with SPF is an all natural, oil free facial moisturiser that protects and hydrates your skin.
