Nappy Rash Treatment

Nappy rash is the most common skin problem that occurs in babies.

Even if you are a very careful parent, sometimes nappy rash can’t be avoided. Whether you use disposable or washable nappies, it could still happen to your baby’s delicate skin.

What does it look like?

Nappy Rash TreatmentYou will know if your baby has a nappy rash when your baby’s bottom looks red, inflamed or sore. It’s not only the bottom that can be affected. The outer thighs and the baby’s genitals are sometimes affected too. The areas where the nappy often has contact with the skin are the most irritated part. A nappy rash can be very itchy or painful. This can be a cause why your baby is uncomfortable and irritated.

How to treat a nappy rash?

• Regularly change your baby’s nappies. Frequently changing your baby’s diapers will prevent your baby’s bottom to get soiled and wet. It is recommended that you change your baby’s nappy after each poo or wee so that the nappy area will remain dry.

• Always clean your baby’s skin after a nappy change. Gently wash your baby’s skin (bottom and genitals) by using a hypoallergenic or a mild soap and lukewarm water. Make sure to rinse the skin thoroughly and gently pat dry with a soft towel. If washing can’t be done and you have to use disposable wipes, double-check that the wipes don’t have alcohol as it will cause skin irritation.

• Apply a nappy cream every nappy change. To keep your baby’s delicate skin protected and dry, apply a thin layer of nappy cream every time you change your baby’s nappy. It’s best to use nappy creams that don’t have synthetic chemicals like parabens, sulphates, petrolatum, PEG’s synthetic fragrances, glycols, phthalates and colorants as these can cause skin irritation and inflammation.

• Give your baby’s bottom a rest. Wearing a nappy all the time can cause nappy rash. Letting your baby’s bottom air and dry will give time for your baby’s skin to heal. You can also loosely fasten your baby’s nappy so that there’s a proper circulation of air.

• Use a good quality nappy. A good quality nappy will make a difference as it absorbs moisture quickly and this will keep your baby’s skin dry. If you are using cloth or washable nappies, make sure that you wash and rinse your cloth nappies properly.

If the symptoms still persist even after consistently practicing the simple steps above, it’s best to seek advice from a physician.
