How to Get Rid of Cradle Cap?

Cradle cap is a common skin problem in babies.

How to Get Rid of Cradle Cap?It is a kind of a skin disease known as seborrheic dermatitis or infant dandruff. It looks like yellow or white thick crusts or patches that appear on the baby’s scalp. It can sometimes be greasy and also makes the baby’s delicate skin red. Cradle cap happens because during the first few months, a baby’s sebaceous glands are overly active thus producing a lot of sebum that helps oil and protect the skin but at the same time causes cradle cap to form. Usually, this skin condition happens to newborn babies up to three months.

Here are some tips on what you can do to get rid of cradle cap.

1. Wash the head of your baby. Washing your baby’s head everyday can help loosen the thick crust or scales. Make sure to use warm water and a mild or sensitive baby shampoo to not irritate your baby’s delicate skin. Also, make sure to rub the scalp gently and not over-do it.

2. Apply oil. Gently applying oil on your baby’s scalp can and leave it around 15 minutes will help soften and loosen the thick crust or scales. You can use baby oil, almond oil or even olive oil.

3. Moisturise. After each bath, applying baby lotion can help your baby’s skin moisturized avoiding the skin to become scaly and dry. Make sure to use baby lotion or cream that is made for sensitive skin to avoid irritation.

Cradle cap is not pleasant to look at and it normally clears out after a few months. It is not painful for the baby as well as contagious. And it does not mean that if your baby has cradle cap that you have a poor hygiene, it just happens to babies. However, if the cradle cap doesn’t go away and it spreads on other parts of the body like the face and neck, please consult your specialist as it can be another kind of skin irritation.
