The Different Types of Skin Warts

Different Type of WartsWarts are a type of skin condition that is caused by the virus called human papillomavirus or HPV. This virus infects the epidermis which is the top layer of our skin. It enters the body in a certain area of the skin that is usually broken. This then causes a rapid growth of the top layer of the skin which in turn forms a wart. Most of the time warts go away on their own after a few months or years.

You must also bear in mind that there are hundreds of different types of HPV, which cause warts. Most HPVs can be relatively harmless but the ones causing genital warts can cause cervical cancer for women. If you have a suspicion that you have genital warts please consult with your doctor right away.

What Are the Different Types of Warts?

• Common Warts – this type of warts often grown on fingers and toes but not limited to these body parts. Common warts usually have rounded top and may appear rough and grainy. They are also greyer than the surrounding skin.

• Filiform Warts – Filiform warts are shaped like tiny flags or tags of skin. These type of warts are usually found on the mouth, nose, neck or sometimes under the chin. They are the same color as a person’s skin.

• Flat Warts – this kind of wart have a flat top and looks as if it has been scraped. The color of this wart usually ranges from brownish, pink or even slightly yellow. Flat warts grow on the face, arms and thighs.

• Periungual Warts – Periungual warts are usually the painful kind of wart and can affect the growth of nails. This type of wart is usually found growing under or around the fingernails and toenails.

As mentioned, more often than not these types of warts go away in time, however, you should keep in mind that warts can spread to other parts of your body. They can also be contagious to others. There are different home treatments that can help cure this skin condition. Some of these treatments are: freezing treatments, salicylic acid or duct tape.

However, please bear in mind that if your wart does not respond well to these home treatments or if you are unsure of the type of skin wart you have and if you have diabetes or an immune deficiency you should consult with a doctor on what treatment is recommended.
